Dr. Sarat Chandra
About Sarat
Prof. P. Sarat Chandra is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and one of the world’s leading epilepsy surgeons. He graduated from MKCG Medical College, completed his M.Ch. in Neurosurgery at NIMHANS, Bangalore, and subsequently undertook advanced fellowship training in epilepsy surgery and functional neurosurgery at UCLA, USA.
Over the past three decades, he has established and led one of the largest epilepsy surgery programs in the world, with experience of more than 4,000 epilepsy surgeries encompassing the full spectrum of paediatric and adult epilepsy procedures, including hemispherotomy, hemispheric disconnection, corpus callosotomy, SEEG, robotic epilepsy surgery, neuromodulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and deep brain stimulation. He founded India’s first comprehensive Centre of Excellence for Epilepsy integrating advanced neuroimaging, MEG, neurobiology, genetics, artificial intelligence, and translational epilepsy research.
Sarat has pioneered several novel surgical techniques that have transformed epilepsy surgery worldwide, including endoscopic hemispherotomy, endoscopic corpus callosotomy, robotic thermocoagulative hemispherotomy (ROTCH), and robotic radiofrequency ablation for hypothalamic hamartoma. These innovations have been validated in peer-reviewed literature and incorporated into international neurosurgical practice and major epilepsy textbooks.
His research spans clinical trials, surgical innovation, artificial intelligence, neurogenetics, connectomics, biomarkers, and molecular mechanisms underlying drug-resistant epilepsy. He was one of the principal investigators of the landmark New England Journal of Medicine randomized trial demonstrating the superiority of epilepsy surgery over continued medical therapy in children with drug-resistant epilepsy, a study that has influenced international treatment guidelines and clinical practice. His work has resulted in more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, 10,000+ citations, an H-index exceeding 50, multiple international patents, and over US$15 million in competitive research funding.
Sarat has played a major leadership role in international epilepsy. He serves as Chair of Epilepsy Surgery for the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Asiano-Oceanian Region, is President of the Indian Epilepsy Society, Past President of the Asian Epilepsy Surgery Society, and a member of several ILAE international task forces. He has helped establish epilepsy surgery programs across Asia and Africa and is a frequent invited speaker and live surgical demonstrator at leading international epilepsy and neurosurgical meetings.
His academic mission is focused on advancing precision epilepsy surgery through innovation, translational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, minimally invasive techniques, and improving global access to epilepsy care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
